Pablo Martín

Pablo Martín (Buenos Aires, 1974) is an Argentinian visual artist whose practice spans painting, illustration and design, exploring humanity through an anthropological lens. Guided by a lifelong fascination with the primitive and the primeval, his work draws deeply from African art, the Indigenous cultures of Latin America and ancestral traditions from around the world. Ritual, mythology, nature and the sacred form the foundations of a practice that seeks to reconnect with humanity's earliest visual languages.p> Working primarily with line as a tool of excavation, Pablo creates symbolic compositions that feel both timeless and contemporary. Tribal masks, spiritual figures and totemic forms emerge throughout his work, weaving together cultural memory, imagined futures and deeply personal narratives. His paintings evoke the enduring power of ritual while quietly questioning the relationship between humanity, history and the natural world.

Materiality plays a central role in Pablo's practice. He is continually drawn to the depth and complexity of black, experimenting with acrylics, inks, graphite, carbon and natural pigments to achieve surfaces rich in texture and atmosphere. He also embraces the passage of time within his chosen materials, working on found papers, aged and weathered sheets, reclaimed timber, rusted iron and assembled ceramics, allowing each surface to carry its own history into the finished work.

International residencies in Mexico City and Oaxaca (Mexico), and Tilcara and Salta (Argentina), together with mural commissions in Paris, Vienna and Berlin, have further enriched his distinctive visual language. These experiences continue to inform a practice that transcends geography, drawing connections between ancient traditions and contemporary life.

Pablo lives and works in Buenos Aires, Argentina. His work is held in private collections throughout Argentina and internationally, where it is celebrated for its intricate symbolism, expressive linework and powerful exploration of identity, heritage and the sacred.

My practice is rooted in an enduring fascination with humanity's earliest forms of expression. I am drawn to the visual languages of Indigenous, African, folk and outsider art—not as references to imitate, but as ways of understanding our shared history, spirituality and relationship with the natural world.

Ritual sits at the heart of my work. I am interested in symbols that transcend culture and time, carrying stories of identity, memory and belief. Through masks, totemic figures and imagined beings, I seek to create works that feel both ancient and contemporary, inviting viewers to reconnect with something instinctive and universal.

Material is as important as image. I work across painting, drawing, ceramics, murals and printmaking, often using found paper, reclaimed timber and weathered surfaces that already carry the marks of time. These materials become active collaborators in the work, bringing their own histories into each composition.

Line is my primary language. Using simple sticks, charcoal, graphite, ink and natural pigments, I build images through gesture rather than precision, allowing each mark to reveal rather than describe. I am continually drawn to the depth of black—an elemental colour that speaks of mystery, memory and the unknown.

My paintings are not intended to provide answers. Instead, they offer spaces for contemplation—where the sacred and the everyday, the ancestral and the imagined, coexist. They are invitations to pause, to reflect, and to recognise the enduring threads that connect us across cultures, generations and time.
